We must seek Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e help in times of need. He alone is Al-Qadir and Al-Aziz. Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e says in the Holy Quran:<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Lord has said: “Call to Me that I may answer your call. Surely those who disdain worshipping Me will enter Hell, disgraced.” <\/span><\/i>[40:60]<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

At times, we must make difficult decisions. Decisions that will have a lasting impact on our lives, in particular, can be extremely daunting. It is times like these that we need Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e divine guidance and intervention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The best way to ask for Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e guidance is through prayer. This can be in the form of supplication as well as <\/span>Istikhara<\/span><\/i>. Ideally, we can do both to gain Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e help and guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Istikhara<\/i><\/b>-A Deep Dive<\/b><\/h2>\n

The word <\/span>Istikhara<\/span><\/i> is derived from the word<\/span> khair,<\/span><\/i> which means goodness. In essence, through <\/span>Istikhara,<\/span><\/i> we are seeking goodness from Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e , who is the All-Knowing. It is against Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e divine Grace and Excellence that He communicates directly with mere mortals. Even the blessed Messengers (<\/span>\u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0647\u0650<\/span> \u0671\u0644\u0633\u064e\u0651\u0644\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064f<\/span>) of Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e received divine revelations through the intercession of Hazrat Jibrail (<\/span>\u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0647\u0650<\/span> \u0671\u0644\u0633\u064e\u0651\u0644\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064f<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e is closer to us than we can ever imagine and there is a way we can get guidance from Him. A tradition narrated by Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (<\/span>\u0631\u064e\u0636\u0650\u064a\u064e<\/span> \u0671\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0670\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0639\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0647\u064f<\/span>), an esteemed companion of the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) does as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Prophet (p.b.u.h) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur’an. He said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): — ‘Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as’alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta’lamu Wala a’lamu, Wa anta ‘allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta’lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa’aqibati `Amri (or ‘ajili `Amri wa’ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa’aqibati `Amri (or fi’ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.’ (O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter–(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)–Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter–(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)–Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (<\/span><\/i>\ufdfa<\/span><\/i>) added that then the person should name (mention) his need.\u201d <\/span><\/i>[Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 2, Book 21, Hadith 263]<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

This hadith details the purpose of and how <\/span>Salat al-Istikhara <\/span><\/i>should be performed. The special prayer is performed when we want to receive divine guidance. It consists of two <\/span>rakahs<\/span><\/i> performed after the obligatory <\/span>salah<\/span><\/i>. The supplication for Istikhara follows this<\/span>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is customary to refrain from talking to anyone after <\/span>Salat al-Istikhara <\/span><\/i>and go to sleep<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>One must have clear intentions to seek Allah\u2019s <\/span>(<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e<\/span> guidance on top of all the prayers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Individuals who perform <\/span>istikhara <\/span><\/i>report getting visions related to their decisions in their dreams. Seeing colors like green gives a positive sign and encourages us to proceed with the decision, while red or similar colors signal a negative outcome to the decision and should not be proceeded with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, individuals do not see anything, but there is a feeling of satisfaction or restlessness, depending upon the guidance provided. Regardless, when done correctly<\/span> istikhara<\/span><\/i> can tremendously help us with critical decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance of <\/b>Dua<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

Dua<\/span><\/i> or supplication is a basic form of worship in Islam. Glorifying Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e and turning towards Him for help is a kind of prayer. <\/span>Dua<\/span><\/i> is different from <\/span>salah<\/span><\/i> in that it is not obligatory, nor does it have specific perquisites or rituals. However, <\/span>dua<\/span><\/i> compliments <\/span>salah<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the supplication that comes straight from the heart. Our deepest desires and most urgent needs can be summed up in <\/span>dua <\/span><\/i>and much more. Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e expects us to submit to Him completely and ask only Him for anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sincere and dedicated supplication, according to the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>), is the only form of worship that can alter destiny. It can turn our fate as anything is possible for Allah All Mighty (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e. So, if we make <\/span>dua<\/span><\/i> to receive guidance from Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e and blessing for goodness, it will surely be answered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How <\/b>Istikhara<\/i><\/b> and <\/b>Dua<\/i><\/b> Complement Each Other<\/b><\/h2>\n

It is advised that we should turn to Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e in times of need as much as we can. This is why, when confronted by critical decisions, we should all do both perform<\/span> istikhara<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>dua<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Istikhara <\/span><\/i>is a special <\/span>dua<\/span><\/i> that has been taught by the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>). This makes it similar to other supplications that have been designated for specific needs, as evidenced by the traditions of the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both <\/span>istikhara<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>dua <\/span><\/i>strengthen our faith in Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e as we turn to Him in the direst circumstances. It highlights our trust in our Lord (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dua<\/span><\/i> in addition to <\/span>istikhara <\/span><\/i>is meant to further invoke Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e assistance. We can plead for Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e to bless us with His guidance. Since the words of <\/span>dua <\/span><\/i>in general are not fixed or defined, our supplications can be deeply personal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e is the All-Knowing, through <\/span>dua,<\/span><\/i> we can plead for His favor by going into details about the decision that needs to be taken. We can mention the matter regarding which decision needs to be taken, like marriage or a new job offer, and what we expect the outcome to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeking Allah\u2019s (<\/b>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/b> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/b>)\u200e Blessings<\/b><\/h2>\n

At any and every stage of life, we require Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e blessings and assistance. We are always dependent on Him as Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e is the source of all goodness that is in existence. Without His help, there is no hope. This is why we must ask for His favors and blessings any chance we get.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can never praise or glorify Him enough. We are dependent upon Him, while He is completely independent of anything. To seek Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e help, we should do all we can; this includes praying to Him in various forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To help make important decisions, it is ideal that we perform <\/span>istikhara<\/span><\/i> and make <\/span>dua <\/span><\/i>to Allah (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e for maximum guidance. Allah\u2019s (<\/span>\u0633\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u0647\u064f<\/span> \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0649<\/span>)\u200e pleasure is the only way we can succeed in this world and the Hereafter, so to achieve this, we must do everything we can.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
